“His is a visual poetry that describes not only the physical world,
but the spiritual creative forces that have called it into being.”
“Bela Petheo’s extraordinary story as an artist and educator took him from Hungary to the University of Chicago, and in 1966 to Minnesota where he taught at Saint John’s University for many years, and still resides with his family.
When we take the time to absorb one of his images we see an artist’s view of the world structured through the means of great technical skill. Bela’s creative sensibilities express not only the underlying physical structures and foundations of the world before him, but also its very essence. His is a visual poetry that describes not only the physical world, but the spiritual creative forces that have called it into being. Just as the brush strokes and facets of form create representations of nature, so does Bela’s strong use of color add a further unifying visual and emotional element of expression to his work that makes it come alive for each individual viewer along the way.
How fortunate we are to have such a creative spirit in our community, sharing his strong vision of the world that we may see and feel things differently with our own eyes and hearts.”
